About Us Story: The Family Business
When Robert Owens, affectionately known as Grandpa Bob to the family, established Right Carpet & Interiors in September 1977, it was a true carpet store with rows and rows of samples and a small corner of wallpaper in the back. Robert’s sons Lohn and Larry Owens quickly learned how to install carpet and help maintain the trailer park that Bob and wife Vella managed!
In the 90’s, Right Carpet & Interiors became an exclusive Mohawk dealer. By this time, sister Linda Owens worked in the store as a salesperson and manager for many years. As grandkids grew up jumping around carpet stacks and using the new warehouse as a jungle gym, they would also clean carpet samples and dust to earn money for candy at the convenience store in front of the Villa Mall.
Later in the decade, Lohn took over the store as Bob got sick and looked to surround himself with people who could help take over. There have been many amazing people who worked here to help navigate the changes and growing pains over the years.
As members of the family reached high school age, many joined the family business! Jennifer became a full-time salesperson in 2002, then later attended the International Academy of Design & Technology earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design. After graduating in 2013, Jennifer came back to help grow the store even more, with her passion for architecture helping catch details that needed addressing.
Jandi started working full-time at the store in 2006, all while attending college and earning her Cosmetology license. Even after moving to Kansas in 2013, Jandi has been working remotely since then with Account Payables, Inventory Management, and other roles.
In 2020, Jennifer and Jandi wanted to take on more of the store responsibilities and allow Lohn to begin working less hours. At the company’s 2022 Christmas Party, Lohn announced that Jennifer would be taking over the business and he would be stepping back. After a year of learning this very big task, Jennifer has truly stepped into the role and has been doing an amazing job ever since!
The Right Carpet & Interiors Family Tree
We absolutely love this family tree representation from local artist Casey McCoy that tells the Owens family history at our store! You will notice many special details to symbolize our family members.
The main tree trunk features a carved heart with “B&V” to represent Bob and Vella Owens who opened the store in 1978. The branches of the tree represent the kids along with their children and grandchildren:
- From Linda’s branch came Bryce and Yadira.
- From Larry and Deb’s branch came Kyle, Rachel, Adison, Emerson. Daughter Brooke, Ryan, Chase, Breck, and Ashley.
- From Lohn and Mary’s branch came Jessi, Joshua, Braydon, Megan. Jennifer, Dustin, Hayden, Emma, Lucas. Jandi, Jerrin, Lanee, Emma Belle, and Jaxon.
- From Lisa and Eric’s branch came Raleigh, Katie. Leighton.
Although not everyone mentioned has worked at the store, everyone has been a part of the Villa Mall at some point in time. Vella truly loved putting on a Christmas Bazaar, hosting a green chili cook-off on St, Patrick's Day, and creating many more memorable events!
